Portland attractions

Here is a quick look at some of the things to see whilst you're in Portland.

If you want to find out more about
the history of Portland, this small museum,
which is near Church Ope cove, is a good
place to start.

Based in an old quarry on the West of
the island, Tout Quarry is a sculpture park
with exhibits carved into the rock. One of
the most famous carvings is "falling down"
(pictured) by Anthony Gormley.

Portland Castle was built by Henry VIII in
1540 and is one of his best preserved

Between 11:00am and 5:00pm you can
climb the 153 steps to the top of the
lighthouse for a fantastic view.

Diving

Portland is a popular location for
diving - the seas around the island have
claimed many ships over the years and
the clear waters make it great for
diving.

Chesil Beach, around 18 miles long, is an
incredible sight. There is a visitor centre
just as you cross over the bridge onto the
island. On the eastern side of the beach
the fleet lagoon is a site of special interest
and supports a wide range of wildlife.
